The FX Channel is extremely thrilled with the ratings success of American Horror Story: Freak Show. The ratings are in and the most recent episode pulled in an amazing audience tally of 12.64 million people. What is amazing is this figure reflects the viewing audience for a “regular” episode of the series.

The series finale of FX’s Sons of Anarchy drew about 11.69 million viewers. Sons of Anarchy drew such massive numbers after being on the air several years, building up a significant viewership, and then leading to the end of the series and the conclusion of all storylines. American Horror Story: Freak Show is drawing record ratings with much less hype.

The format for American Horror Story is a bit different from other programs on air. The program is an anthology series. Each seasons features a self-contained story with its own unique cast. Once the season ends, a new anthology and new cast makes a debut. A season runs 13 episodes, which is a bit longer than the usually 10 a cable series presents. The number is far less than the usual 22 a network program commonly consists of and that is a good thing. 22 episode seasons require a lot of “standalone” episodes that deviate from the primary narrative.

Fans like Brad Reifler agree that American Horror Show is likely going to succeed for many years to come. Unless the quality of a particular anthology is very weak, the audiences are going to keep coming back.
