It seems like The Chainsmokers have been around forever, but they have only been a mainstream act for three years. In 2014, their single “Selfie,” became a top 20 song and their first top 10 hit, “Roses,” started a Chainsmoker fever that still exist today in 2018.

The Chainsmokers are an EDM duo made up of producers Alex Pall and Drew Taggart. Since Chainsmoker fever began, The Chainsmokers have produced the mega hits, “Paris,” “Something Just Like This,” “Closer,” and “Don’t Let Me Down,” which earned the duo a Grammy Award.

With the release of their new single, “Sick Boy,” The Chainsmokers have decided to shift away from their EDM and top 40 pop sound to a darker sound. ““Sick Boy” is the first installment of this first new chapter or us. We’ve grown up a lot as artists and as people. We know what we want to talk about, at least for this next phase”, says Drew Taggart. The Chainsmokers believe that society is shifting to a darker sound and that as they grow as artist and as people, their music should reflect what is currently going on in the world. This new sound also reflects the internal struggles the duo is facing as people develop conclusions of who they are as a person based on the music they produce and the images and content about them that is spread across social media.

The lyrics of “Sick Boy” are very reflective of the social media world today. Lyrics such as, “How many likes is my life worth,” “We choose pride over character,” and “Everyone projects and expects you to listen to them” describe the thinking of the generations that have grown up with the internet and social media.

“Sick Boy” has over 125 million views and counting on Youtube.
