The cinematic world of monster movies is about to get a whole lot more interesting. We’re sure that you’ve read about Universal’s elaborate plan to develop a shared cinematic universe for some of the most important ‘monster films’ of all time: Dracula, Wolf Man, The Mummy, Frankenstein’s Monster. Well with ‘Dracula Untold’ releasing to commercial, if not critical, success it was only a matter of time until the team at Universal pulled in more heavyweight writers. The most recent acquisition has been Jay Basu, head writer for ‘Monsters: Dark Continent’. My friend Mark Ahn is super stoked about this writer.

‘Monsters: Dark Continent’ is the science fiction blockbuster follow up to the indie creature flick, ‘Monsters’. This sequel is a complete change in tone to the first film but it seems to be an evolution, rather than a bastardization. Basu looks to have expertly wrangled together what folks loved so much about the first film while adding a Hollywood blockbuster spin to it.

Now, as part of Universal’s ‘Monster Team’, Basu will be tasked with helping to develop the new shared cinematic universe. While there are no details on which script the writer will be in charge of, there are opening for ‘The Mummy’, ‘The Wolf Man’, ‘Van Helsing’, ‘Frankenstein’, and ‘The Invisible Man’. While we wait for the other shoe to drop in terms of his assignment, we can eagerly look forward to Universal’s ambitious plan to bring something new with these classic tales.
