What It Means When “Democratic Backsliding” Is Happening In A Nation

Law Professor Sujit Choudhry has released his latest book, ‘Constitutional Democracies in Crisis?”. Sujit Choudhry is a comparative constitutional law expert who has taught in both America and Canada. He has one chapter of his book dedicated to a tweet put out by Eric Holder, President Obama’s Attorney General, which warned that if Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating the White House, were fired it would cross what he termed as an “absolute red line”. At that point the American people must be heard and they will act in judgment on what happens to Donald Trump and the rest of his administration.

Sujit Choudhry writes in the book about the threats to constitutional democracy that have been going on ever since the Cold War ended. He calls what is happening in the United States and some other western nations as “democratic backsliding” and “authoritarian backsliding”. In his latest book he writes about how some governments who have been democratically elected are manipulating the rules and institutions of democracies in order to remain in power indefinitely. Once in power they start by attacking the judicial system as well as the free press. Soon they convince everyone that they are the only ones with the right to rule and democracy is lost.
